What is Shades on Point?

Shades on Point is a new brand of handmade sunglasses born in Pittsburgh and named for the sacred place where our three rivers come together. Each pair is made from eco-friendly materials and features an etching of the Pittsburgh skyline on the side. We launched with our first three styles – The Allegheny, The Mon and The Ohio – to pay homage to the rivers that sculpted our great city.

What’s different about our sunglasses?

There are other brands of sunglasses out there made of wood and other natural materials. Our sunglasses are not only eco-friendly, but have an extra special element to pay tribute to the Steel City – the place our brand was born. Each style features an etching of the Pittsburgh skyline on one arm and our brand name "Shades on Point" on the other. We have also differentiated ourselves through our packaging and unboxing experience. What do the names of your sunglasses mean?

Our Shades are named for the iconic place in Pittsburgh – Point State Park – where the Allegheny and the Monongahela Rivers join to form the mighty Ohio River, which cuts its way westward to the Mississippi River. "The Point," as it's lovingly referred to by locals, honors our past as a fort city, but symbolizes the gateway to the west and the innovation that our city is now built on.

How long has Shades on Point existed?

We launched our first styles in March of 2017, but the dream has been brewing since 2016. It took time to get all of the details to be just right, and now we're ready to share our Shades with all of you.

 

Product

What kind of lenses do you have in your sunglasses?

All Shades sunglasses feature polarized lenses. On top of offering 100% UVA/UVB protection, polarized lenses also greatly reduce the glare created by the sun's reflection making things like long car rides, reading in the sunlight, fishing, catching a baseball game and other outdoor activities much more enjoyable. Our sunglass lenses are also impact resistant certified by the FDA.

Do you carry prescription lenses?

Not currently. But, if the demand continues to be there, we will look into expanding. If you're interested in prescription lenses, email us at info@shadesonpoint.com to let us know.

Are your glasses for men, women or both?

Both! All of our handmade Shades were designed to be unisex and look great on both men and women. Check out our social pages on Facebook and Instagram to see examples of what the different styles of Shades look like on.

Do you offer custom sizing options?

Not currently. But, our handmade Shades feature high-quality stainless steel spring hinges that allow them to flex, creating a comfortable fit on both narrow and wider faces. Once you get your Shades, if you don't like the way they fit or look, you can always return them with the included prepaid return label in the same box that they arrived in for a full refund. 

What style do you recommend for certain face shapes?

Popular opinion says that there are four major face shapes out there: Square, heart, oval and round. Taking our three styles of Shades, here are our recommendations for which style you might like best based on your face shape, however we picked styles that are universally popular:

Will you be getting more styles?

Do you offer a warranty for the sunglasses?

We do not currently offer a warranty for your sunglasses, but if anything ever happens, email us at info@shadesonpoint.com, and we'll be happy to assist you.

Can I customize my sunglasses?

We currently don't offer customization options on our actual Shades, however, each package is shipped with a custom, hand-written note. Much like a flower shop would, we're happy to enclose a special note with your order if it's for a gift or special life moment. Just email us at info@shadesonpoint.com, and we'll be happy to take care of your request. 

How should I take care of my sunglasses?

Each pair of Shades is sold with a microfiber pouch and an engraved bamboo case. We recommend using the microfiber pouch to both clean and protect your lenses. The bamboo case will help your Shades keep their shape and prevent them from being bent in your bag or suitcase. The bamboo case is also the same size as a standard beverage, so it fits perfectly in a car or golf cart cupholder.

Will my sunglasses float?

Buoyancy varies by pair, but we don't recommend you let your Shades go for a swim!

Are Shades sunglasses waterproof?

Because our Shades are made of eco-friendly materials, they are porous. While wearing them in light rain will not harm them, we do not recommend you submerge them or wear them while swimming or showering. 

Will my sunglasses look exactly like the photos online?

The shape of your Shades will look exactly like that particular style looks online, however, because each pair is hand made using natural materials, the wood graining will be unique every time, providing our customers with a one-of-a-kind product.

 

Packing and Shipping

How are the sunglasses packaged?

We put a lot of thought into every part of our Shades packaging. We wanted the unboxing experience to really be unique. Every pair of Shades comes in a microfiber pouch which is tucked safely inside a bamboo case that features the same etching of the Pittsburgh skyline that is found on the arm of every pair of Shades. On top of that, customers also receive a personalized note and some other fun surprises that really make the experience unique. Does a case come with my sunglasses?

Yes! Every pair of Shades will come with a microfiber pouch and bamboo case with the same etching of the Pittsburgh skyline that is found on the arm of every pair of Shades. The bamboo case will help your Shades keep their shape and prevent them from being bent your bag or suitcase.

Can I send sunglasses to someone else as a gift?

Yes! We love doing personalized gifts for people. Shades are a great gift for any occasion, even as something fun to send to a new bride and groom for their honeymoon. Each package is shipped with a custom, hand-written note. Much like a flower shop would, we're happy to enclose a special message with your order if it's for a gift or special life moment so it feels like it came right from you. Can you include a personalized note with my gift?

Yes! See answer above. We're more than happy to do this and think it adds a lot to the experience of receiving our Shades.

Why do baseball cards come with the sunglasses?

This one takes us back to our childhood. Anyone who's ever opened a pack of baseball cards knows that feeling of anticipation, waiting to see which players you were going to get. We couldn't resist putting a little piece of Pittsburgh history in each box, and thought what better way to do this than with something iconic from our city's oldest sports team.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is always FREE! We know it's not as good as grandma's homemade baklava, but think of it as our gift to you!  

What shipping methods do you offer?

All packages are shipped via USPS ground service. We've also recently added expedited shipping. If you need to request expedited service, email us at info@shadesonpoint.com.

Do you ship internationally?

Not yet – but, if you're interested in shipping to somewhere outside of the United States, email us at info@shadesonpoint.com, and we'll see if we can help you out.

 

Orders

I didn’t receive a confirmation email, what should I do?

If you didn’t receive a confirmation email after you placed an order with us, email us at info@shadesonpoint.com. We'll look into your order and let you know the status.

Can I return my sunglasses after I receive them?

Yes! We know that it's sometimes hard to fall in love online before you meet face-to-face... even if you both swiped right, so we include a free return label in all of our packages. If for any reason you're not 100% satisfied with your order, just pack the contents of the package in the original shipping box, apply the included return shipping label and drop it at your nearest US Post Office. We'll issue a refund to you once the package has been received and the contents have been inspected.  We will then reach out to you to follow up on your specific issue so we can always continue to improve. Sorry, similar return service for first dates isn't included.

What is the turn-around time for my order?

Once an order is submitted, we typically process and mail the sunglasses within 1-2 business days. Most orders are mailed the following day. During the holiday season, especially Christmas, we may experience slightly slower shipping times due to higher volume. We promise to always get your order to you as quickly as possible! Note: As apparel items are created on-demand, processing times take up to a week.

What should I do if I've made an error on my order?

We can make changes to your order as long as it hasn't been shipped. Just e-mail us at info@shadesonpoint.com.

 

Pricing/Payment

Do you have any discount codes available?

Throughout the year, we'll offer various discounts and promotions. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram and sign-up for our emails to ensure you never miss a chance to get your Shades at a discount.

I’m a boutique or retailer, can I place a wholesale order with you?

Yes! We work one-on-one with our retail partners to put together a package that makes the most sense for them. If you'd like us to put something together for your business, please email us at info@shadesonpoint.com.

What do you accept for payment?

We accept most major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover as well as PayPal and Apple Pay.  Contrary to popular belief, sunflower seeds are not an acceptable form of currency at Shades on Point.
