I'm writing to you today from a patio on the beach in San Diego. I'm currently on day eight of a ten-day West Coast adventure, already having made stops in San Francisco and Los Angeles... and well, I'm feeling rather grateful and thought I'd take a minute to share why with all of you.

When I first created Shades on Point Sunglass Co., I did so as a way to connect to the city I grew up in and, still to this day after more than a decade away, a city I still call home. Pittsburghers are extra-proud of their city. Show me a Pittsburgher who doesn’t have a list of reasons why Pittsburgh is the best city in America… maybe even the world.

Mr. Rogers was a man who believed that we all needed a place to belong, to feel loved. A man who understood the power of a neighborhood, and every day, invited us all to be part of his with a catchy song and a simple smile.

I was recently in a presentation for my day job and was shocked to hear that women now make up 51% of this great country. We’re no longer the minority, technically.

As an entrepreneur, heck, as a human being, I have people who I look to for inspiration and motivation. We all do. I’m sure you’ve got a list of go-to Instagram handles that are the first thing you look at in the morning or the last you look at before bed. One of mine is Gary Vaynerchuk, or Gary Vee.

Marketing for a start-up is a lot different from marketing for a Fortune 100 company. My CMO and I both have day jobs at some of the biggest companies on the planet, so the thinking we are immersed in on a daily basis almost has to go out the window when it comes to the marketing strategy for our start-up… almost.

It’s been an incredible start for Shades on Point! We’re overwhelmed with the support we’ve received from so many. What started as a simple desire to “do it better,” has become a dedication to create something from nothing – and I couldn’t be more humbled by our launch.
